New Year’s at Finley

January 3, 2015.

In an attempt to start 2015 on the right foot, I organized a little group hike on the first Saturday of the new year. A few friends, students and friends-of-friends decided to join up and take a walk.

I chose Finley because it was close to town, had a fairly large trail system with easy trails and had some great views. It was a cold but dry winter day, with a dramatic layer of clouds threatening the blue sky all afternoon. Our walk led us through oak forest, expansive fields and marshy wetlands. We enjoyed a casual pace and good conversation, discussing the things we’d hope to accomplish in the new year. And what better place to do that than in the middle of nature?

We admired the oak trees. Balanced on fallen logs. Looked for birds. Soaked in the views. Spending time in nature with friends is one of the best ways to enjoy a day.

Not every hike has to be an epic. Sometimes just what the body and soul needs is a simple walk in the woods.
